Abstract:
»This thesis provides a comparative analysis of the feasibility and implementation of war crime compensation, reparation, and responsibility in Germany and Japan after World War II, viewed through the perspectives of economic and political philosophy. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, including analysis of historical documents, political speeches, and case studies of compensation programs, alongside reparations payments and post-war economic aid data. This study reveals significant divergences in the approaches adopted by Germany and Japan.
The main findings indicate that Germany engaged in extensive and sustained reparations efforts, coupled with a greater willingness to openly confront its past atrocities and accept responsibility, driven by a strong moral and political imperative, particularly concerning the Holocaust.
In contrast, Japan's approach to war crime compensation and responsibility has been more limited, characterized by a smaller scale of financial compensation primarily through government-to-government settlements, and a more complex and often contested acknowledgment of its wartime actions, influenced by geopolitical considerations and domestic political sensitivities.
Ultimately, this thesis concludes that the differing post-war contexts, international agreements, political priorities, and interpretations of justice and accountability, as informed by various resources, led to the contrasting trajectories of Germany and Japan in addressing the profound legacies of their post World War II war compensations.«
